eBay Hack Week

I had the honour of facilitating eBay Australia’s Hack Week. The week was focused on eBay’s member rewards programme - eBay Plus. It was an extra special event for me as it was an event I had conceived and run during my time as an eBay employee. I had a short window to create the event branding, schedule and agenda. It was an opportunity to talk to eBay employees about Design Thinking. To educate them on new, more innovative ways of working and provide them with tools to take into their daily working lives.

Business Objective

  • As a major contributor to this membership programme, eBay Australia had an opportunity to have a big impact on its direction

  • Grow the eBay Plus membership. eBay Plus customers on average purchased 5x

  • Discover feature for addition to the eBay Plus roadmap

  • Inspire and educate the business on more innovative ways to work

  • Align with Global Hack week

Customer Problem

  • eBay Plus members do not understand the value and benefits they receive from their eBay Plus membership.

Design Challenge

  • Create a week-long innovation programme that enabled teams to identify opportunities to create value for eBay Plus customers

  • Teach teams how to Ideate on ways to deliver this value to customers

  • Help teams create prototypes to demonstrate and sell this value to the judging panel which included the managing director and VP of eBay Australia.

Achievements

  • A thoroughly engaged audience of participants across engineering, product, marketing, category, customer support and merchandising

  • Orchestrated an event that allowed in-person and online participation across all activities

  • The winning idea and second runner-up were both slated as very strong contenders for development.
